Haiti - Security : Heavy rains in figures

The heavy rains that struck from the 20th to the 24th of April on the departments of South, Southeast, Grand'Anse and Nippes caused floods, landslides and extensive damage.

The department of the South is the most affected, especially the 11 communes: Aquin, Arniquet, Camp Perrin, Cavaillon, Les Anglais, Les Cayes, Chardonnieres, Maniche, Roche-à-Bateau, Saint Louis and Torbeck.

The rains affected many people already affected by Hurricane Matthew and whose homes had not yet been rehabilitated. According to information provided by the departmental authorities and the Directorate of Civil Protection, there are currently four deaths in the Southern Department, 7 houses destroyed in Arniquet, 8 in Maniche and severely damaged infrastructures.

According to Max Serge Daniel, the Departmental Delegate of the South, about 50% of the population of the department (350,000 people out of 700,000) would be affected by these rains. Considerable losses are reported in agriculture, livestock and fishing gear in the coastal zone. According to Delegate Daniel, 80% of the spring harvest would be destroyed. A first estimate of the damages revealed many flooded houses, many households affected and about 10,000 houses damaged.

The 6 communes of Chantal, Les Anglais, Les Chardonnières, Les Côteaux, Port-à-Piment, Tiburon and part of Port Salut are inaccessible since April 23 due to the severe erosion of the road at the foot of the bridge connecting Port Salut and the West Coast. This erosion is due to the obstruction of the waters under the bridge by fallen trees during Hurricane Matthew.

Given the seriousness of the situation in the city of Les Cayes and its surroundings, the South Emergency Operations Center (COUD) has been activated.
