Haiti - Politics : Mayor Chevry celebrates the abolition of slavery in La Rochelle

Wednesday to La Rochelle (France) at the official invitation of the Mayor of La Rochelle, Jean-François Fountaine, the Mayor of Port-au-Prince, Ralph Youri Chevry attended the celebration ceremony of the abolition of the Slavery and the slave trade.

In his speech, Mayor Chevry, front among others officials of the French Government, the Mayor of La Rochelle and many personalities, stressed the historic importance of this date for Port-au-Prince, the capital of the First Free Black Republic of the World.

The event took place opposite the Port of La Rochelle, a symbolic place of the slave trade, from where departed the slave ships that traded the triangle France-Africa-Carribean.
