Haiti - Justice : Towards the institutionalization of legal assistance

The Working Committee on Legal Assistance, in the presence of the representatives of the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSPJ), the Director General of the Ministry of Justice and that of the School of Magistracy, of , Director of Judicial Affairs of the MJSP and officials of the Rule of Law section of the Minustah, formally handed over its work to Heidi Fortuné, Minister of Justice and Public Security.

It is a preliminary draft law which, if accepted by the Executive in the Council of Ministers and ratified by both Houses of Parliament, will become an important tool in strengthening access to Justice for the benefit of the most deprived, a significant number of whom are languishing in prison because they lack the financial means to hire a lawyer.

This working group, coordinated by former Minister René Magloire, has produced a valuable work, acknowledged Minister Fortuné who took the opportunity to stress the importance of legal assistance in particular in the fight against prolonged preventive detention.
