Haiti - FLASH : Partial assessment of the bad weather, 5 dead, 19 missing

According to a partial report published by the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC) on the damage caused by the heavy rains that hit a large part of the national territory (16, 17, 18 May), the situation of the population is difficult and is subject of rapid response measures.

At least 5 loss of life :

In the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, May 17, a 17-year-old girl and a 24-year-old woman attempting to cross wild waters in two different locations lost their lives in Port-de-Paix, in the north-west. A 49-year-old man also died under the same conditions in Saint-Louis du Nord. A fourth death in Beaumont, that of a woman who tried to cross the river at the 3rd section Mouline (Ganier locality) has been reported. Also in Grande-Anse, a child died at the time his parents tried to evacuate their home to take refuge in a neighbor's home in Anse du Nord, Pestel.

In addition, 10 fishermen are missing at the Irois and 9 at Anse-d'Hainault;

In Grande-Anse, 322 people are housed in temporary shelters;

In Port-de-Paix, 20 people, sheltered in temporary shelters, returned home during the day;

The majority of the rivers are flooded and dry ravines have overflowed, especially in the Great South and Northwest where several cities are flooded;

In the South, several infrastructures were affected, notably the approach of the Roche-à-Bateau bridge, damaged by the floods of the river. Land access to coastal communities on the western tip of the South is becoming difficult;

The Departmental Emergency Operations Centers (COUD) of Grande-Anse, Nippes, North-West and South are partially activated. The National Emergency Operation Center (COUN) is also partially activated.

Petit-Goâve :

On Wednesday, residents of Capdestré (Bas-Tapion of Petit-Goâve) blocked the national road #2 to protest against the non-attendance and indifference of the local authorities face the flooding of their house and gardens due to heavy rain besetting this region for 2 days. The victims finally liberated the street following the intervention of the agents of the Departmental Unit of Maintenance of the Order (UDMO) HL/ Guyto Mathieu (Correspondant Petit-Goâve)
