Haiti - Politics : Rice dumping, end of the mystery

Thursday, 48 hours after the mysterious rice dumping of a few tons of rice on land near the River Grise, https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21042-haiti-flash-an-important-quantity-of-rice-mysteriously-thrown-at-tabarre.html rhe Ministry of Trade and Industry (MCI), in a note dated Thursday, explains: "When a rice boat is landed on the wharf of the National Port Authority, in the presence of the customs agents, the operator responsible for the landing made a maneuvering error of the crane of the vessel that accidentally hit one of the tanks of the vessel containing seawater."

While he explained that this was only a small part of the shipment, he explained that rice washed by seawater had been quarantined by the importer in consultation with the customs authorities and Ministry of Agriculture in accordance with incident procedures. Thereafter it was agreed to transport this rice on private land to Tabarre to be destroyed, as provided by law.

The Ministry regrets that the dumping site is the object of a plundering by the population and that it took the intervention of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) to put an end to this situation before proceeding the destruction of rice.

On Thursday, Ronsard St-Cyr, Secretary of State for Public Security, said the rice from the United States, wetted by seawater, was safe for human health and contained no toxic substances, while maintaining the prohibition of selling it on the local market.
