Haiti - Canada : Promoting Citizenship Initiative

Monday at the Royal Decameron Hotel on the Arcadins Coast, ended a national seminar of training of communinties accompaniers organized by EQUITAS, in collaboration with its Haitian partners, as part of the implementation of the project to promote committed citizenship. This training brought together 24 participants and 10 women.

The aim of this 8-day training course was, in particular, to encourage the active involvement of participants in the life of their community, to develop citizen reflexes through a commitment and awareness about the social relations issues affecting their community, incite and accompany citizens in a creative action from its inception to its culmination.

The "I commit, work together" toolkit, developed jointly by the partners, highlighted the participation of women, the inclusion of people with disabilities, respect for the sexual choices of LGBTI people and non-discrimination with respect to children.

Invited to take a stand on vulnerable groups, Florence Elie, the Citizen Protector took the opportunity to introduce participants to the mission of the OPC, its legal framework and its functioning. She emphasized the values of acceptance, tolerance, understanding and generosity to be developed in order to create a just society based on the principle of respect for the transcendent dignity of the human person enshrined in Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

It should be noted that this seminar benefited from the financial support of numerous institutions, including the Ministry of International Relations of the Francophonie of Quebec, the American Jewish World Service (AJWS), the National Foundation for Democracy (FND) and the support of JILAP, KOURAJ and the GAAR, which are carrying out actions in Haiti with a view to promoting committed citizenship.
