Haiti - Quebec : Haitian Immigration, positive results

In the days that followed the earthquake of January 2010, the Quebec government, In addition to have accommodated the 4.278 Haitian nationals, Canadian citizens, permanent residents and holders of temporary residence permits that were in Haiti during the earthquake, has made available to Haiti an emergency financial assistance of $3 million. "There is still much work to do. That is why our government and several partner agencies working together to help meet the needs of people who come from Haiti and to support the Quebecers of Haitian origin," said Mr. Charest.

Expeditiously, the government of Quebec has established a special humanitarian program to meet the needs created by this tragic event. This unique program has enabled Quebecers of Haitian origin to sponsor exceptionally members of their family that could not be sponsored under the regular immigration programs. "I am pleased to announce that we have fulfilled our commitment, as to date, over 3,000 certificates have been issued under this special program. The original goal of 3000 is already over and we continue to process all applications received under this program," said the Minister of Immigration and Cultural Communities, Kathleen Weil.

Since the earthquake, the Quebec government has accelerated the processing of cases already underway to reunite as many families as possible. All immigration categories combined, Québec has welcomed more than 3,300 Haitians, an increase of over 80% over the same period in 2009.

Emmanuel Dubourg, deputy of Viau and coordinator of the government action with the Haitian community, was wished to stress the unique role of community organizations who have tirelessly supported and accompanied the families affected. "It is with a generosity and an incredible energy that organizations and individuals of the community have pledged to help the earthquake victims. I am convinced that they will remain well present to ensure their welcome and support the successful integration," said Mr. Dubourg.

"The tragedy has brought our government to conceive an effective solution, humane and realistic face to a tragedy of unprecedented proportions. There is no doubt that these new citizens of Quebec will contribute to the richness of our society," concluded the Prime Minister.
