Haiti - Elections : Warning and threatens of the candidate Michel Martelly

Michel Martelly, candidate for President of Haiti, whose supporters have rioted after the publication of preliminary results, December 7, 2010, said yesterday during a press conference, that "his presence in the second round was not negotiable". He warned that "he would send his supporters into the streets if he is not reintegrated into the race by the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP), as requested by the United Nations and the Organization of American States (OAS)."

Earlier in the week, in a press note, Michel Martelly stated "It is illogical and irresponsible to continue the phase of the litigation with such an institution [CEP]. The conclusions of the report of the experts from the OAS in the ranking of candidates are for us definitive"

Before unnecessarily increase tensions already high in the population, to speculate on a possible conspiracy of the CEP or the Government and to manifest, impatience see intolerance in a democratic process, Michel Martelly should consider the statement made Earlier this week, and remember that:

  • The results contained in this report refer to checks made at the tabulation center and does not take into account the outcome of the litigation stage to come. THIS IS NOT THE PUBLICATION OF THE FINAL RESULTS OF THE FIRST ROUND OF ELECTIONS. Only the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) at the end of the process of disputes (litigation stage) will be able to publish the final results of the first round, results which could be different.

  • The remark of José Miguel Insulza, OAS Secretary General are clear "Only after the dispute period, during which the complaints of the candidates will be studied, that the final results of the November 28 elections will be published" and those of Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive "the final outcome, which will help to determine who will be first, second, third, fourth or fifth can be determined only at the end of the litigation process, [...] there is a report that has made an evaluation on a tabulation center [...] there is a contentious phase, saw the small gap between different candidates, which can effectively create, as suggested by the report, changes in the classification"
