Haiti - FLASH : Increase of seismic activities in the Nippes

The Seismic Technical Unit of the Bureau of Mines and Energy and the Permanent Secretariat of Risk Management (SPGRD) bring to the attention of the population of the Nippes in particular, on a increase in seismic activity recorded in the region over the last few weeks.

Engineer geologist Claude Prepetit, Director General of the BME, confirms that two simultaneous seismic shocks of magnitude between 2 and 3 were felt at Anse-à-Veau and Arnaud (Nippes) on Wednesday, August 16 at 3:10 am https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21840-haiti-news-zapping.html . Another 3-second slower shake was also recorded on Sunday, 20 August at 3:11 pm, as well as on 16 June at around 10:00 pm and at Jérémie on 13 June (intensity of 4.5 On the Richter scale) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21290-haiti-flash-shake-4-5-in-haiti-update.html

He recalled that an earthquake of magnitude 6 which occurred on October 27, 1952 at 11:20 in the evening, followed by replicas until March 1953, had destroyed the town of Anse-à-Veau. 63 years later, the energies accumulated in the active faults of the region seem to be recovering from activity, 46 seismic events occurred in three months between 3 September 2015 and 4 January 2016. The tremor of Tuesday, October 13, 2015 occurred at 7:58 am was magnitude 4.06 on the Richter scale, it was located 4 km deep and its epicenter was located 9 km at sea north of the town of Anse-à-Veau.

Engineer Prepetit stresses that earthquakes are not predictable and can occur at any time. Consequently, faced of the seismic threat, preparatory actions remain and remain the norm: compliance with earthquake-resistant construction standards and behavioral learning before, during and after an earthquake.
