Haiti - Politic : The Democracy is in danger...

The Ambassador of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) in Haiti, the Argentinian lawyer, Rodolfo Mattarollo, met with Rene Preval to discuss of the situation of the Nation. He stated that the transition to democracy in Haiti is "in danger" with the return of former dictator Jean Claude Duvalier, also criticizing the international pressures on the current government of President René Préval.

Former President Jean Claude Duvalier, accused for the atrocities committed during his regime (1971-1986), called on Friday for national reconciliation saying that he felt a "deep sadness to my compatriots who recognize, rightly, to have been victims under my Government" https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-2181-haiti-duvalier-full-speech-of-duvalier.html

The ambassador described as "scandalous" the behavior of the former dictator since his arrival in Port-au-Prince, recalling that Duvalier is free, at the disposal to the court and can not leave Haiti, but "it is allowed to doing politics," which creates a scandalous situation, in terms of human rights and the fight against impunity, lamented Rodolfo Mattarollo.

Statements made by Duvalier were described by the diplomat as "a very significant decline" in the normalization process in Haiti that "the international community should not accept"

The Ambassador of UNASUR also denounced the pressures of the "Ambassadors of the North" on President Préval, who made statements in the press to "say what the government should do". A language that surprises, completely outside rules of diplomacy and the spirit of respect for the sovereignty and independence of the Haitian people. Faced with the situation in Haiti, the diplomat stressed the important role of moderator that must be played by Latin America, in its participation in the missions of the United Nations (UN) in the Caribbean.
