Haiti - Canada : Towards a temporary work permit for asylum seekers

Faced with the thousands of asylum seekers and despite the increase in the number of staff assigned to handle the applicants' files, it may take many months before the status of an applicant is determined.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, despite his promises of fast processing of asylum applications, has to face to the reality on the ground. In view of the facts, Ottawa and Quebec are studying the possibility of issuing temporary work permits to asylum seekers, pending determination of their status, which could be a good short-term solution that would reduce dependency to social assistance of the applicants while promoting their autonomy.

Prime Minister Trudeau continues to repeat that the situation is under control and that its administration is in the process of significantly increasing the pace of evaluation of cases... but observers are far from convinced...
