Haiti - Environment : Biogas production project in Gonaïves

Martin Coiteux, Quebec Minister of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy, Public Safety and Minister responsible for the Montreal region, announced that Biothermica Technologies Inc., a leader in the field of biogas recovery, a Montréal-based company, will receive nearly $ 1 million ($ 999,617) from the Green Fund for a valuation project of biogas in the municipality of Gonaïves in Haiti "I am pleased with the funding granted to Biothermica Technologies, [...] By supporting the work of companies like this one, Québec is making a concrete and positive contribution to the efforts to adapt to climate change in the most vulnerable countries."

In the first phase, the project involves the implementation of an integrated waste management and recovery system. This project will create jobs for Gonaïviens and generate economic spin-offs in the region and contribute to the production of clean energy.

The project will be a turning point in waste management in the municipality of Gonaïves. The project focuses on the development of solutions adapted to local needs, the adaptation and deployment of this proven clean technology and the emergence of a dynamic business ecosystem through the establishment of a strong partners. To ensure real local ownership, Biothermica Technologies has joined a local non-profit organization, Bioenergy Haiti, which will be responsible for the management of the facilities in addition to ownership. The project also involves the active participation of several Haitian local groups and the population.

Guy Drouin, President of Biothermica Technologies inc. declared "Since our first mission to Gonaïves in 2010, we have established strong links with this municipality, the central government, the local population and Bioenergy Haiti so that this first integrated waste management project is a model North-South [...] We welcome the commitment of the Government of Quebec, which supports us in the fight against climate change not only in Quebec but in the most vulnerable countries [...]"
