Haiti - Education : The Digicel Foundation inaugurates a new school

Digicel Foundation inaugurated last week a new permanent preschool of six classrooms in Bellecourt, Cité Soleil, in partnership with the local organization Hands Together. The Foundation also took this opportunity to inaugurate two classroom in modular structure, [semi permanent] to the benefit of preschool Joly Garden of Turgeau, to replace their buildings destroyed by the earthquake. It is a school built in partnership with USAID, and IDEJEN and Kentz Ingénierie. Providing a quality environment for 300 young children.

The School Sainte Jeanne de Chantal and Joly Garden are the first two preschools funded by the Foundation. "The Foundation is committed to building 50 schools after the earthquake of January 2010. Six of them have now been completed and 12 others are under construction," said Ms. Josefa Gauthier, president of the Digicel Foundation [founded in 2007, the Foundation supports the education of over 20,000 primary school pupils across Haiti].

"This school is another step in the commitment of Hands Together to never allow poverty to be an excuse for children being forced to live in slums [...] Sainte Jeanne will be one of priority preschools of Hands Together. We had the pleasure to employ dozens of community workers, to construct the school and we commend them for their realization", said Father Tom Hagan founder of Hands Together.
