Haiti - Environment : Where are the Botanical Gardens of the State ?

The Botanical Garden of Les Cayes (JBC) realized without any public funding, recalls that according to the 1987 Constitution in its article 256 "Within the framework of the protection of the Environment and the Public Education, the State has obligation of proceed to the creation and maintenance of botanical and zoological gardens in some parts of the Territory "30 years later, except the launch of the development work of the National Botanical Garden of Haiti (JBNH) March 6 at Source Zabeth (Ganthier, Dept. West) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-20266-haiti-environment-launch-of-the-work-of-the-national-botanical-garden.html the State has not yet concretely realized any Botanical Garden in Haiti.

To help the State to create a Garden in each Department, the JBC puts its expertise at the disposal of all the officials of the country who would like to endow their city, their commune or their department with this tourist and conservation structure. For fiscal year 2017-2018, the JBC is willing to accompany them from conception to completion. Training sessions, workshops and tours will be conducted to help them realize their dream...

Latest news : The technical team of the National Botanical Garden of Haiti met on October 18th. The following day, the Board of Directors endorsed the following actions, thanks to the resources mobilized by the Ministry of National Education

  • The rehabilitation of the "Beach Center (Centre balnéaire)" theme building and the installation of sanitary blocks for better site management ;

  • The development of the business plan of the Garden and the implementation of the communication strategy to target the neighboring community and the general public ;

  • The establishment of the plant propagation center of the Garden ;

  • The construction of the first phase of the fence.

Meanwhile the National Botanical Garden of Haiti gives 7 tips to avoid mistakes in reforestation projects in Haiti

1. Avoid planting exotic species :

Neem (Azadiratcha indica from India) and Leucena (Leucaena leucocephala from Mexico) are invasive species introduced into Haiti that threaten Haitian biodiversity and increase our vulnerability. Leucena is ranked among the 100 most devastating species in the world by the Invasive Species Specialist Group of the IUCN Species Survival Commission.

2. Avoid planting one or two species only :

The conservation of our mountains is done with hundreds of native or endemic species. Do not destroy them by calling them weeds and favoring one or two species.

3. Avoid planting trees outside their growth altitudes :

One of the failure factors of reforestation projects is to plant trees regardless of their growth altitudes.

4. Avoid planting only fast-growing plants :

The majority of Caribbean species are slow-growing plants and constitute our resilience to natural disasters (cyclone, hurricane).

5. Avoid planting only for human needs (wood, fruit) :

Birds are the disseminators of our seeds for reforestation. If there is no food for them, they will be gone.

6. Avoid starting a reforestation project without a floristic inventory :

The majority of reforestation projects have destroyed the native and endemic flora that represents our strength against natural disasters and climate change.

7. Avoid traditional reforestation projects :

The level of the country's degradation requires talking about ecosystem restoration. A multidisciplinary team is important. We must then involve phytosociologists, ecologists, botanists, landscapers to carry out reforestation projects.
