Haiti - Economy : Towards harmonization of trade standards in the CARICOM market

As part of the reflections from the 31st meeting of the CARICOM Regional Organization for Standards and Quality Management Technical Committee, Daniel Denis, the Director General of the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MCI) recalled the importance of these common standards, which are necessary for the well-being of trade within CARICOM. "Nowadays, it is clear that without this harmonization, it will be very difficult to continue to develop intra-CARICOM trade and exchanges between the states of our community and third countries", adding that these regional standards remain indispensable to reduce technical barriers to trade, facilitate the functioning of the region under the same rules and thus achieve the regional integration advocated by the CARICOM member countries.

During this meeting the standards of the renewable energy sector were the focus of discussions because they are of particular interest to the region.

It should be recalled that this Technical Management Committee was set up by the hemispheric organization in 2005 to assist in the development and harmonization of standards in the region. This Committee is composed of representatives of several countries. In addition to Haiti, there are representatives from Trinidad & Tobago, Saint Lucia, Guyana, Antigua & Barbuda, Jamaica, Dominica and Barbados.
