Haiti - Agriculture : Haitian organic fruits and vegetables in the Martinique market ?

On the initiative of the Unit for the Promotion of Private Investments in the Agricultural Sector (UPISA), a transversal structure of the Ministry of Agriculture, recently held a workshop between a delegation from Martinique and Haitian agricultural producers.

During this workshop, the Martiniquans who annually consume nearly 100 tons of fruits and vegetables and produce only 15%, have expressed their willingness to source vegetables from Haiti and their great interest in Haitian products, the majority of which results from a biological culture.

The delegation submitted a list of some forty products for which they are interested and at length explained to Haitian producers the conditions for exporting their goods to Martinique.

The issue of costs and periodicity at this stage has not been addressed, on the other hand, the availability of products and a traceability system that meets European standards was the focus of discussions.

Alain Thermil, one of the UPISA executives, believes that the Martinican offers a great opportunity for Haitian agricultural entrepreneurs, to develop the production of organic vegetables in the country, especially since the Martinique are ready to invest if necessary to all levels of the production chain.
