Haiti - Justice : «The Haitian state violates the rights of its citizens»

Sunday, December 10, as part of the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the Haitian Observatory of Human Rights (OHDH) lamented "the failure by the Haitian state to its commitments" vis-à-vis the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration and other international human rights texts.

The OHDH notes that 70 years after the adoption of this declaration, "the Haitian State systematically violates the rights of its citizens". It stresses that civil and political rights as well as economic and socio-cultural rights are in very bad situations in Haiti in 2017 while "the Government acts to the detriment of fundamental rights".

The Observatory denounces among others the flagrant violation of the right to justice where prolonged pretrial detention and overcrowding have become the symbol of a corrupt justice, violation of the right to health, to education, to life, to food...

The OHDH calls on Haitian citizens to mobilize to defend their rights and the rights of others, inalienable and indivisible rights focused on human dignity. It also urges "the Haitian State to make Human Rights one of its priorities, to work for the equality, justice and dignity of Haitians without distinction and to make every effort to ensure that human rights humans finally be a reality in the country."
