Haiti - Social : Demonstration and mobilization are small... 07/02/2011 13:23:52
For many, mainly for the opposition, the mandate of President Preval ends today ... But a law [very challenged] voted by both chambers, allows the Head of State to remain in power until May 14, 2011, which corresponds to 5-year presidency. The chief of the cabinet of President Préval has confirmed this Monday, in a press statement, that the head of state will stay in power, the time that the country chooses his successor. "He will remain at the power until May 14. He will not go today." A little more than 200 persons have answered to Port-au-Prince, this Monday, to the calls of various actors of the opposition, in order to manifest to demand the departure of President René Préval. Barricades of burning tires and garbage have blocked an already reduced traffic in the capital. The demonstrators threw stones on the police and Minustah peacekeepers who have replicated by firing in the air to disperse them, creating panics movements. For now, there is no sign of mass mobilization to repeated calls from the opposition, but isolated movements of small scale, many streets are empty, the population preferred staying at home by prudence.
