Haiti - Security : Propane Sale Centers, of public dangers

Following a survey carried out nationwide by the National Metrology Laboratory on kiosks and propane gas distribution centers (LPG - Liquefied Petroleum Gas), reporting serious shortcomings that could endanger life of the population, Pierre Marie Du Meny the Minister of Commerce and Industry (MCI), met this week representatives of the LPG sector.

Based on the results of this survey, the Quality Control and Consumer Protection Directorate (DCQPC) wanted to reminds to the main distributors of the standards to be respected for the installation of a kiosk or Propane Sales Center (LPG).

Based on a Dominican document and a Moroccan decree relating to the marketing of LPG, the Quality Control Directorate recalled the basic minimum standards for the installation of a propane gas point of sale, among others: easy access for the fire department and the inspectors of the DCQPC, the presence of functional fire extinguishers on the premises and the competence of the salesman to use them, the cleanliness of the places.

The distributors as well as the MCI have agreed on the establishment of a Commission of reflection to propose answers to all the problems mentioned by the Ministry in order to structure the sector and protect the life of the population. This Commission will be composed of LPG distributors, MCI executives, the Ministry of the Environment, and the Ministry of the Interior.
