Haiti - Reconstruction : NO to the transformation of the Minustah

The Colombian diplomat, Maria Angela Holguin, last week in Bogota had envisaged, with the Security Council, the possibility of transforming the Minustah mission in a development operation for Haiti. In an official statement, the diplomat confirmed that the possibility of transformation of the Minustah will be discussed and supported by the Colombia to the United Nations in April.

Yesterday Tuesday, Professor Fritz Dorvilier and the sociologist and economist Camille Chalmers have publicly expressed their opposition to a transformation of this type.

The Professor Fritz Dorvilier (PhD in development studies) has indicated that it's the role of the Government of Haiti, in collaboration with other non-governmental bodies involved in this area, to realize the social and economic development of the country and to maintain public order and to the Minustah to assist the government, its role is not to replace it. He emphasized on the need that the Minustah continues to play a stabilizing role so that the government can deal effectively with the development.

The sociologist and economist Camille Chalmers who heads the Haitian Platform of advocacy for an alternative development, has estimated for his part, that this proposal comes too late and it confirms the failure of the Minustah in Haiti. He highlighted the mismatch existed between the military structure of the UN mission and the needs of the country, amenting that the objectives of resolution 1742, have not been met. Moreover, he denounced the waste of resources to maintain this force in Haiti, saying the Minustah has caused great harm to the country.
