Haiti - Jacmel : Rebuild the cathedral, but not without mission

Bishop Launay Saturné, Bishop of Jacmel in Haiti, appointed the April 28 by Pope Benedict XVI has expressed his desire to rebuild the cathedral of the city, which is a "symbolic place and of unity", a place that has been heavily damaged by the earthquake of January 2010.

"No reconstruction without mission"

Mgr Launay Saturné, however, insisted that the physical reconstruction of buildings was not all. According to him there is "no reconstruction without mission, without evangelization, without prayer, without preaching the Word of God", while adding that "the fact that I survived proves to me that God still need me and I have a mission. As shepherd of my diocese, I tell to the people who have lost everything: even if everything is lost, God at least left us life. We have therefore the task to work on a more human and reconciled world, and a better future".

The Diocese of Jacmel is located in the southeast of Haiti and covers an area of 2700 km2. It has almost 530,000 inhabitants, of whom 65% are Catholics. After Port-au-Prince, this is the diocese hardest hit by the earthquake of January 12, 2010.

Mgr Saturné Launay was born January 14, 1964 at Delatte (Petit-Goâve). He was educated at the seminary, "Notre Dame d'Haiti". He was ordained priest in 1991. He was successively vicar at Port au Prince, director of the home propaedeutic in Jacquet. From 1998 to 2003 he continued his studies in dogmatic theology (ecclesiology) in Rome, obtaining a license and doctorate from the Pontifical Gregorian University, while being almoner at Saint Louis-des-Français. Since his return to Haiti he taught theology at the seminary and in other institutes and universities "Notre Dame d'Haiti. " He was also in charge of the mariale pastoral Committee of the Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince, and national secretary of the pastoral youth commission.
