Haiti - Chile : A trafficking network of Haitian migrants dismantled

An investigation by the Prosecutor's Office Paola Zárate in Santiago (Chili) on Chilean travel agencies, which brought Haitian citizens to Chile under the guise of "tourists", helped dismantle a network of Haitian smuggling and arrest 5 people 3 Haitians, 1 Chilean and 1 Peruvian who acted in coordination with accomplices in Haiti.

According to Cynthia Contreras, Head of the Migrant Trafficking Brigade, the scheme updated last March allowed Haitians to travel through three travel agencies in Santiago against US $2,000 to obtain their plane ticket, reservation of hotel, US $1,000 guarantee and what to say to stay in Chile and regularize.

Arrived in Chile, the customer did not go to the hotel and had to return the US$ 1,000 borrowed to meet the Chilean requirements. According to Cynthia Contreras many Haitians have been cheated in this operation of traffic with false contracts of work. According to estimates, this network pocketed up to 160 million Chilean pesos a week (± 270,000 US dollars).

Let's hope that the Haitian justice will be able to act against the accomplices in Haiti.
