Haiti - Social : Impact of sex education on women in Haiti

As part of the International Day of Action for Women's Health (May 28), during a conference debate organized by the Collective of the Right to Sexual and Reproductive Health (DSSR), around the theme "se dwa fanm pou jwenn bonjan swen sante"(Women have the right to good health care); sociologist and feminist activist Danièle Magloire, Representative of "Kay Fanm" said that the vulnerability of Haitian women in the field of sexuality is currently one of the major challenges of the national health system.

She emphasized that "this sex education must participate in a deconstruction of the stereotypical representations and misconceptions that women have about their illnesses" criticizing the mechanical idea that links women's health to the only reproductive function that affirms "The woman can not be defined solely from her procreative potential. It exists independently of this potential."

Dr. Reynold Grand'Pierre, Director of the Department of Family Health (DSF) of the Ministry of Public Health, recalled that the average age for first sex in Haiti is between 13 and 14 years for boys and between 16 and 18 years old for girls advocates for family planning reexplaining "family planning, does not prevent women from giving birth, but allows them to give birth at the appropriate time and space births" convinced that pregnancy planning is an important step that would allow women to give birth at the right age and in good conditions. Emphasizing that quality and access to care and hospital capacity are other health system burdens that directly affect women.
