Haiti - Social : Demonstration for the minimum wage, maximum repression

Nearly a thousand workers took to the streets on Monday to demand a daily minimum wage of 1,000 gourdes and the social benefits promised by the government, including transport, health insurance cards and social housing, which are still without follow up...

A demonstration that was brutally repressed by agents of the Intervention and Maintenance Corps (CIMO) a special unit of the National Police of Haiti. Dozens of workers, men and women, were beaten severely with truncheons and had to be rushed to the hospital Accident Insurance Office of Labor, Sickness and Maternity (OFATMA) on the airport road.

The organizers condemned this extreme repression against workers peacefully demanding the right to a better life in a demonstration authorized by the Departmental Directorate of the West of the PNH.

They point to Bernard Schettini, the Director of the National Society of Industrial Parks (SONAPI), whom they accuse of having programmed this intervention to intimidate the protesters and prevent the workers from leaving the factories to take the streets.

Despite this violent repression, workers intend to continue Tuesday the mobilization and claim a minimum wage of 1,000 gourdes and promised social benefits.
