Haiti - Health : Cuba gave an update on its efforts in Haiti

Cuban doctors working in humanitarian missions in Haiti, held Sunday, their annual conference during which they reaffirmed their commitment to life and health of the Haitian people whose the country has been devastated by the earthquake of January 2010.

At this congress, Lorenzo Somarriba, Head of the Cuban brigade, conducted the annual review of the work done in Haiti. During 2010, the Cuban medical brigade serving in Haiti, carried more than 1.7 million visits, 37.846 surgeries and 10.170 childbirth.

The brigade chief, explained ; the strategy to strengthen the Haitian health system and the primary care in order to eradicate the cholera epidemic, and the tripartite agreements with Brazil and other countries. As part of the effort, he recalled that the Cuban Brigade provides assistance in 69 units of the Health Program Cuba-Venezuela and in 87 centers of the the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) in Haiti.

Indicating that 10 municipal hospitals, funded by the Bolivarian Alliance for the peoples of our America (ALBA) will be built and operational by this year, as well as two public clinics and a warehouse for drugs and medical equipment.
