Haiti - Economy: The Association of Industries of Haiti in favor of a rise in customs tariffs

Following the proposals of the Minister of Finance to strongly increase the tariffs of certain products https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24770-haiti-economy-towards-an-increase-of-tariffs.html ; while the French-Haitian Chamber of Commerce and Industry CFHCI doubts the effectiveness of its measures https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24847-haiti-economy-tariff-increases-the-cfhci-doubts-the-effectiveness-of-the-measure.html and that the Private Sector Economic Forum is concerned about the consequences of this measure; the Association of Industries of Haiti (ADIH) applauds tariff increases proposed [without consultation] by the Government to support domestic production.

ADIH prounounces publicly in favor of a necessary tariff reinforcement and an effective fight against smuggling and tax evasion "The sector of the national industrial production is responsible, as a whole, of several hundreds of thousands of jobs and is seeking an adequate tariff policy and effective border control. No country has been able to develop without facilitating the growth of its industries" had already affirmed the ADIH in January 2017.

The Association of Industries of Haiti subscribes to the need to propose tax laws, but it recognizes the constraints to the meeting of this objective when emergencies require short-term responses. Several bills are still pending in Parliament, including the Customs Code and the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), which Haiti has still not ratified, which expires on 7 July 2018, threatening in the event of non-ratification of thousands of jobs in Haiti, which risks causing corporate relocation in the neighboring Republic.
