The Japanese Embassy in Haiti has proceeded yesterday to the signing with nonprofit organizations of three contracts in the fields of environment and education.

Soil conservation project and reforestation of watersheds

Beneficiary organization: Organisation Fraternelle pour le Développement de Savane-Carré (OFDS)

Amount funded: US$ 100,984

The "Organisation Fraternelle pour le Développement de Savane-Carré", is a nongovernmental organization working in the promotion of agriculture, livestock, promotion and support of socio-economic development programmes that could improve the quality of life of the population of Savane-Carré.

Its project is divided into 4 basic points.

- Treatment 3 km of gully

- Construction of 375 "seuils"

- The protection and correction of about 25,000 linear meters of watersheds

- The planting of 11,560 fruit trees and 8,000 forest trees over 60 hectares of land.

Project of treatment of the gully Fond Diable

Beneficiary organization: Fondation des Jeunes du Morne l'Hôpital (FJMH)

Amount funded: US$ 97,208

The projet of the Fondation des Jeunes du Morne l'Hôpital will be realized in Carrefour Feuilles, 7th communal section of Port-au-Prince. The fundamentals of this project are:

- The treatment of about 1,800 linear meters of gullies

- The construction of 130 "seuils"

- The planting of 18,040 seedlings of orange.

Project of Construction and equipment of school of application Jules Verne

Beneficiary organization: AYITI EDUCATION

Amount funded: US$ 92,264

For the NGO Ayiti Education, they are:

- The construction of 4 new classrooms, including 3 for the primary section and one for the third promotion of the Normaliens of the School Jules Verne

- The complete equipment of these 4 classrooms

The three projects described above are the last that were approved for fiscal year 2010. During the signing ceremony of the three contracts, has held the balance sheet of the "Assistance to Micro-Local Projects contributing to human security" (APL) for fiscal year 2010. In resume, the Japan has funded for fiscal year 2010 13 projects for a total of $US 1,374,653 in the areas of agriculture, education, health, basic infrastructure and the environment.

Through the program APL, the Japan continues to support efforts to improve basic needs of human life. It provides flexible financial support to NGOs and non-profit humanitarian organizations with to help them to implement local development projects.

We take this opportunity to thank Japan for their help before, during and after the earthquake of January 2010, and we offer our condolences to the Japanese people which has been struck by a strong earthquake yesterday.
