Haiti - Environment : Port-de-Paix, launch of the project to reduce insalubrity

Friday in Port-de-Paix, Nicole Yolette Altidor Director General of the Ministry of the Environment in the presence of several personalities of the Department among others: Senator Kedlaire Augustin, Departmental Delegate Owell Theock, Mayor of the city of Port-de-Paix, Yanick Auguste, ASEC and CASECs of the region, proceeded to the launch of the project to raise awareness and reduce the unsanitary and flood risks in the North West Department in general and in the city of Port-de-Paix in particular.

In her speech Nicole Yolette Altidor emphasized the benefits of the project, which she says is a major asset not only for the city but for the whole department. Explaining that as part of the planned activities, there is a training component for local authorities and civil society organizations and regular sanitation campaigns in the most vulnerable areas followed by reforestation days for the protection of soil and the treatment of the department's watersheds.

She took the opportunity to draw the attention of the participants to the construction of the Fruit and Forest Germplasm Center established in the 3rd section Aubert commune of Port-de-Paix https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-22550-icihaiti-agriculture-laying-of-the-first-stone-of-the-4th-plant-propagation-center.html which is a strategic tool put in place by the Ministry to better address environmental problems and reduce its vulnerability to natural and environmental hazards.

While affirming her support for the success of the project, Senator Augustin promises to plead with the Upper House for an increase in the budget allocated to the Ministry of the Environment, to help it better respond to Haiti's environmental problems.

The Departmental Delegate and the Mayor of Port-de-Paix welcome the project, which they see as a means of appeasing the local community, often victims of floods and other environmental problems linked to natural hazards.

Note that several areas of the city of François Capois aka "Capois-La-mort" such as the entrance to the city and "Soukannal" among others, will benefit from this project.
