Haiti - Education : D-12, Back to school threatened in Cap Haitien

To 12 days to go back to school (September 3, 2018), teachers' unions in Cap-Haïtien announce a peaceful march on the first day of school to demand better working conditions for teachers and denounce non-compliance of the agreement signed nearly five years ago with the Ministry.

Roland Osirus, head of "Fòs Lekòl Nò" speaks of injustice in the treatment of teaching staff and informs that the faculty of public schools will go on strike the day of the reopening of classes if the Ministry does not meet the demands before the start of the school year.

For the unionist Avena Jasmin, coordinator of the Alliance of Haitian Educators, the Ministry shows no desire to improve the status of teachers, saying that teachers are the lowest paid public servants in the country. He asked the Ministry for a quick and positive response to the teachers' main demands, namely : the appointment of qualified teachers, the payment of salary arrears and social benefits, if he does not want students to be penalized at the beginning of the school year.
