Haiti - Education : «Let's teach children to read early to ensure their future»

"Let's teach children to read early to ensure their future" it's around this theme that the Education Office of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) commemorates in Haiti this Saturday, September 8, 2018, the International Day of Literacy.

As part of this celebration, USAID through the Early Literacy Capacity Building Program (LAC), aims to draw attention and raise awareness of the importance of public opinion, relevant stakeholders, and parents, on the learning in the mother tongue and the involvement of parents and the community in the early learning of reading and the academic success of children.

To mark this day, the LAC Program Office will carry out a series of outreach activities in partner schools in September and October 2018 in the four departments affected by this program.

Friday as a prelude to this day, the Secretary of State for Literacy, Émile Brutus emphasized the importance of literacy and the efforts to be made to achieve the objective zero illiterate in Haiti.

For his part, Pierre Josué Agénor Cadet, the Minister of National Education Minister stressed that the best way to solve the problem of illiteracy is to promote access to all children to school, once and for all , emphasizing that in the meantime we must "accompany adults who must master the concepts of reading, writing and arithmetic and also learn a trade to progress [...]"

Recall that the first successful Alpha experiment in the world took place in the town of Martial in Jacmel in 1947. However, more than 70 years later, according to official data, there are 5,000 people in the Public Service staff who do not can not read or write https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-16188-haiti-education-5-000-persons-unable-to-read-or-write-in-the-public-service.html and the illiteracy rate of the population in Haiti exceeds 50%, one of the highest rates in Latin America https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24872-haiti-cuba-towards-the-literacy-of-300-000-more-haitians.html , while our Dominican neighbors are about to be declared by UNESCO free of illiteracy on their territory [7.5% in 2017].

"Literacy" is the ability to understand and use written information in everyday life, at home, at work and in the community to achieve personal goals and to expand one's knowledge and abilities.
