Haiti - Health : Noncommunicable diseases fatal, under-diagnosed in Haiti

Dr. Lauré Adrien, Director General of the Ministry of Public Health points out that in Haiti, the difficulties of access to health care reduces for a large part of the population, the possibilities of diagnosis or the biological screening of a certain number Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as : diabetes, cancers, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, obesity among others.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) with regard to NCDs, the health systems of developing countries are under severe stress : A projection to 2030 puts the figure at nearly 54% total of non-communicable disease (NCD) morbidity . According to the WHO, every year nearly 15 million people between the ages of 30 and 69 die from a NCD and more than 80% of these premature deaths occur in developing countries, affecting the poorest and most disadvantaged social strata.

Haiti is no exception to this harsh reality, according to the 6th Mortality, Morbidity and Service Utilization Survey (EMMUS-VI 2016-2017) commissioned by the Ministry of Public Health with the technical assistance of the World Program for Demographic Surveys and Health, the rate of people with a NCD (between 35 and 64 years old) is as follows :

Hypertension (˃140 mmHg): 49.0% (Women), 37.9% (Men)

Diabetes (≥ 6.5% HbA1C): 14.1% (F), 8.2% (H)

Obesity (˃ 30 BMI): 17.2% (F), 2.9% (H)

Tumors L 0.3% (F), 0.1% (H)

Note that in the case of cervical cancer, of the 11.4% of women who tested, 3.9% were tested positive...

Lauré Adrien recalls that in recent months "the Ministry of Health has launched with national and international partners a campaign entitled" Caravan for behavioral change, prevention and screening for certain noncommunicable diseases".
