Haiti - Social : Minimum wage rejected, workers demand 1,000 gourdes per day

Thélémaque Pierre, spokesperson of the Trade union platform of textile factories and Fignolé Saint Cyr, the Secretary General of the Autonomous Central of Haitian Workers (CATH), reject the new minimum wage of 420 gourdes per day of 8 hours of work for the workers of the export-oriented assembly industries (Article 5 Segment F of the Decree https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-25766-haiti-flash-all-details-on-new-minimum-wages.html

According to them, this adjustment of 70 gourdes (+ 20%) will not allow workers to provide for their needs evoking among other things the cost of living and the daily cost of transportation.

Télémaque Pierre claims that the workers maintain their demands for a minimum wage of 1,000 gourdes a day while Fignolé Saint Cyr called the publication of the decree of true provocation for the workers. They announce the continuation of the concertation with a view to planning an imposing protest movement against this new minimum wage.

Dominique St Eloi, the Coordinator of the National Central of Haitian Workers (CNOHA) agrees, saying that the workers will soon be on the street to denounce what he calls "a salary of poverty" and claim in addition to a salary of 1,000 gourdes, health insurance, social housing and free transportation for workers. He criticizes a Government at the service of the richest who oppress the unfortunate and the most destitute.
