Haiti - Economy : The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the West sounds the alarm

In a note, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the West (CCIO) confirms its support for the Haitian people in its request to break with the practices of nepotism, corruption and squandering of public funds and remains attentive and supports the commitments made by President Moüïse to shed light on the PetroCaribe program.

The CCIO believes that the current situation "requires immediate, clear and decisive action" asserting that "the accustomed mode of operation can no longer be supported or tolerated."

"This status quo is all the more deplorable as recent figures released by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Bank of the Republic of Haiti reveal that a staggering deficit gap between public revenue and expenditure https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-25776-haiti-flash-state-loans-to-the-brh-jump-from-96-to-188-billion-in-3-months.html emphasizing "This fiscal slump reinforces the impending threat of economic and social explosion that may lead to a political catastrophe."

Faced with this situation, the CCIO urges the Prime Minister and his Government to :

"Reduce and / or eliminate lavish spending and waste at all levels of government;

Take all measures to collect taxes and duties owed by all citizens and income generating entities, giving special attention to the fight against smuggling and fraud;

Allow citizens contributing to the National Office of Old-Age Insurance (ONA) and the Office of Accident Insurance for Work, Sickness and Maternity (OFATMA) to regain control of the governance of these institutions by setting up tripartite boards of directors according to the wishes of the law.

By launching this alarm, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the West "calls upon the executive, legislative and judicial powers as well as all the organized sectors of the Society to consult one another in order to do everything possible to stop and reverse the infernal spiral in which Haiti is engulfed."
