Haiti - Security : Against background of Gang war, the PNH tries to control the situation in PAP

On the evening of November 1, during an armed clash between two gangs, "Kiki" a gang leader in Cité Soleil died in a shooting, while the gang leader "Bout Jean Jean" was wounded in the neck during firing exchanges, in the Pernier area and led to Bernard Mevs hospital with several other wounded.

"The police informed by the health authorities of the presence of bullet wounds went to the hospital to make a report," confirmed Friday Commissioner Berson Soljour, West Departmental Director of the National Police of Haiti (PNH), stating that as soon as doctors allow "Bout Jean Jean" will be arrested, being the subject of many complaints.

In addition, Commissioner Soljour, denied the information circulating suggesting that the police occupied the hospital preventing doctors from doing their job. There is certainly a visible police presence, but outside he stresses, in order to secure the perimeter and ensure the protection of the hospital if necessary, a rumor suggesting a possible operation of armed gangs to take forcibly controlling the hospital.

Since the middle of the week, gunshots and bursts of automatic weapons have been heard daily throughout the capital, creating a climate of tension and fear in the population. Police in the field, however, seems overwhelmed by the situation and "unable" to regain control of the situation. Several observers attribute this relative inability of the police to a lack of means faced the well-equipped bandits, hidden political motives and a lack of leadership from the Government, could make the situation unmanageable in Port-au-Prince if nothing is done quickly to take the situation in hand.
