Haiti - Economy : A Dominican responsible for more than 20% of textile jobs in the country

The Dominican entrepreneur Fernando Capellàn, President of "Groupe M" and the Industrial Development Company (CODEVI) located in the Ouanaminthe free zone, currently employs more than 11,000 Haitians in the textile sector, ie more than 20% of the 52,950 existing jobs in this sector in Haiti.

Fernando Capellàn plan more than doubles these jobs "By 2020, we plan to offer 25,000 jobs" provided that there is a decline in the pace of strikes.

He proudly recalls that his workers have a health center, a "Tipa Tipa" nursery, cultural programs, a food store, a reforestation program and a savings plan that affects 88% of employees as well as enjoying food and sports activities.

He also added that park employees who receive a salary each Friday have seen an improvement in their standard of living and of their families.

Fernando Capellàn insists that Haiti can double jobs at competitive rates. According to the Dominican entrepreneur, Haiti is positioned in this part of the world where there is no better place for light manufacturing, because of its proximity to the United States and also the HELP legislation. However, for the sector to be able to fill the job, a set of measures must be taken, recommending in this sense : the revision of the Labor Code, the reprogramming of public holidays and a reconsideration of tax provisions.
