Haiti - Environment : 10th workshop on access to the Green Fund

Tuesday in Anse-à-Galet, the Ministry of the Environment through the Climate Change Department and the Departmental Directorate of the West (DDO) launched a two-day workshop on the preparation of Haiti for access to Green Climate Fund, a financial mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (established in 2010) with a mandate to promote low greenhouse gas emissions development.

In front of an audience composed of local authorities and civil society actors, the Deputy Mayor of the Commune of Anse-à-Galet Jacques Henry Filias, who opened the workshop, expects to see some positive benefits for the island of La Gonâve which, according to him, is already suffering the adverse effects of climate change.

This consultation and information workshop (the 10th) should enable the Ministry of the Environment to collect the necessaries data for the elaboration of the Country Program aiming at generating interest, national ownership and increasing access to climate finance. It also aims to inform stakeholders about the Green Climate Fund mechanism and its access modalities.

As part of this program, the Ministry of the Environment's Climate Change Directorate, with the support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), adopts a participatory, inclusive and multi-disciplinary approach that combines community and institutional consultations at the departmental level as well as multi-sectoral consultations at the central level in Port-au-Prince.

In summary, the stakeholder consultation process includes 11 departmental level workshops, including 2 consultation workshops in the West (Port-au-Prince, La Gonâve), a multi-sectoral global workshop and a final document validation workshop for the country program.
