Haiti - Justice : Inauguration of a juvenile court in Les Cayes

Thursday, January 31 in the morning, Jean Roudy Aly, the Minister of Justice in the presence of the Commissioner of the Government of the Court of First Instance (TPI) of Les Cayes, the representative of UNICEF in Haiti, the Dean of the TPI, the President of the Court of Appeal of Les Cayes and the coordinator of the Institute of Social Welfare and Research (IBESR) has inaugurated a children's court located at the Court of Appeal of the city, street Chateaudin.

This juvenile court of Les Cayes responds to a need within the zone to deal with juvenile cases in conflict with the law. It will cover the 6 jurisdictions of the departments of the South, Grand'Anse and Nippes. It is an essential link in the chain of protection of the child.

Subsequently, Minister Aly took the opportunity to lay the foundation stone for the construction of future premises to house the Prosecutor's Office near the TPI of Les Cayes, which should be completed in November 2019.

During his visit to the South, the Minister also took the opportunity to organize a working session with the Government Commissioner and the Commissioner's substitutes. Prosecutors have been instructed to adopt a set of measures to combat more effectively prolonged pretrial detention. The Minister warned "all the prosecutors will be evaluated and those who do not want or can not work will simply be removed from the system."
