UNICEF provided 18,000 gallons of fuel to the National Directorate of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DINEPA) for the operation of 18 pumping stations in the metropolitan area to supply water to neighborhoods in several cities. "These gallons of fuel will produce 300,000 cubic meters of water to meet the needs of 178,000 families who will receive water by tanker or through the drinking water system," explained Charles-Edouard Jean, General Coordinator of DINEPA.

In addition, when unrest erupted, the 754 children's homes (25,000 child beneficiaries) and prisons experienced a water supply disruption. Under such conditions, the use of water was rationed by limiting showers, reducing drinking water consumption or even drinking untreated water. UNICEF provided emergency support to juvenile detention centers, juvenile prisons and childcare facilities and distributed some 4,200 water purification tablets to children's homes.

In recent days, maternity hospitals have had difficulty providing neonatal care while health workers can not get to work. Problems of supply of fuel and health consumables have been reported in health centers. The Ministry of Health, PAHO/WHO and UNICEF identify the priority needs of the most affected hospitals and health centers in order to plan a rapid health response in the event of a major crisis.
