Poetic movement, social and cultural, the slam appears to Chicago in the 80s. It inherits from European, American and African poetic culture by adding the firm will to give the floor to all. Based on the concept of community, the slam affirms the democratic nature of poetry and adds a dimension of entertainment. A young writer in Chicago, Marc Smith, baptizes the slam movement in a bar called the Green Mill, while he organised poetry competitions (Uptown Poetry Slam) arbitrated by the public. "Slam is based on writing but you have to slam the words, the rhythm is essential, time, intonation, a certain energy and studied gestures", defines the Belgian slammer K'ptain Dom.
