As part of the reinforcement of border controls between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, a patrol vessel of the Dominican Navy, in coordination with the General Directorate of Customs, intercepted in the area of ​​Punta Rucia, Puerto Plata (North), a boat carrying a cargo of nearly 3 million contraband cigarettes from Haiti.

Reports provided by the Navy indicate that the boat's captain, Margarito Balbuena Vargas and ten other people on board, were stopped by the naval patrol boat.

Subsequently, during a ground operation, members of the Naval Intelligence M-2 seized a van-type vehicle to be used for carrying contraband cigarettes and a Runner-branded SUV, whose occupants were arrested.

Customs officers recorded and seized 2,910,000 cigarettes in 291 boxes, which were sealed.

All those arrested are under investigation in Puerto Plata by members of the Customs Intelligence and M-2 agents of the Navy to learn more about the sector in Haiti and the sponsors before being placed in the hands of Dominican justice.
