Haiti - Heritage : Beginning of the work of protective measures at Fort Jacques

The General Directorate of the Institute for the Protection of National Heritage (ISPAN) nform the population in general and the residents of Bellevue-la-Montagne and Fermathe, in particular that it has undertaken since the beginning of the month, the work of protective measures at Fort Jacques, damaged by the earthquake of January 2010.

ISPAN remember that Fort Jacques, the most visited monument of Haiti, was declared "National Heritage" by presidential decree dated 23 August 1995.

These works will consist in the erection of 800 metres of fence, the clearing of the enclosure of the fort, the recovery and storage of the "bouches à feu" [cannons]. In a concern for gender equity, 60% of men and 40% of women are already employed to remove the debris and store them for reuse in restoration work.

For security reasons, ISPAN is obliged to prohibit access at Fort Jacques for the duration of this work. The Directorate General of ISPAN apologizes to the public in general and to the residents of Bellevue-la-Montagne and Fermathe, especially for this inconvenience and will inform them of the resumption of visits to Fort Jacques.
