Haiti - UN : Canada advocates a «robust» political mission to succeed Minujusth

Friday at United Nations Headquarters, Marc-André Blanchard, Canada's Ambassador to the UN and Chairman of a UN Advisory Committee, called for the creation of a "robust" UN political mission to ensure succession of Minujusth on October 16th.

This position of Canada is a continuation of the decision of the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, who last March recommended to the Security Council to create a special political mission to maintain support for Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-27118-haiti-politic-un-recommends-the-creation-of-a-special-political-mission-in-haiti.html

Ambassador Blanchard warned countries in favor of a new minimalist mission, for strictly economic reasons and made clear what he mean by "robust". "[...] It is not a question of number of people [...] We need to have the good expertise because it is about lives and the future of Haiti" adding that this new mission will have to bring in Haiti, among others, expertise in terms of rule of law, fight against inequalities but also against violence and crime. Stressing the need to address the causes of the problems, not just the symptoms.
