Haiti - Grand'Anse : One of the regions most affected by land degradation and deforestation

The department of Grand'Anse, victim of poor agricultural practices and uncontrolled cutting of trees, especially for the production of charcoal, is one of the regions of Haiti most affected by land degradation and deforestation which weakens it in the face of major natural hazards including hurricanes.

It is within this framework that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supports grassroots community organizations and NGO partners in the Action Against Desertification (ACD) project (land restoration component) for the establishment of community nurseries, which have already produced, since 2016, nearly 4 million seedlings of fruit, forest and fodder trees used to restore more than 10,000 hectares of land. Environmental education is also taken into account in this project to raise awareness and make people aware of the serious environmental problems facing Haiti.

FAO is also supporting through this Project, the "Nap Rebwaze Grandans" campaign, an initiative launched more than 8 years ago by the Charlemagne Peralte College in Jérémie which involves the urban and rural schools of Grand'Anse in a campaign of reforestation carried out by elementary and high school students.

As part of this 8th edition which ended on June 5th, the Ministry of the Environment and the FAO have already provided a technical support to 5,200 students for tree planting during three days of reforestation in Carrefour Sanon localities and of Léon with Schools Saint-Charles, Béthanie, Bon Pasteur, Cœur de Jésus, la Pépinière, l'Institution Toussaint, the Lycée Nationale of Léon, the École Nationale of Léon, the Collège méthodiste and the lycée of Bonbon.

The project "Action Against Desertification", intended to rebuild the forest cover of the Grand'Anse will continue until February 2020, it is implemented by the Ministry of Environment and FAO with the financing of the Union European in five communes of this department : Bonbon, Jérémie, Abricots, Moron et Dame-Marie.
