Haiti - Energy : Discussions around the hydroelectric dam on the Artibonite River

On the sidelines of World Economic Forum for Latin America, held Thursday and Friday in Rio de Janeiro, Luis Alberto Moreno President of the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB) and Antonio Patriota, the Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs discussed Thursday of cooperation programs with the new government of Haiti and analyzed how to collaborate in the construction of a hydroelectric plant.

"We talked about how to help the new government to succeed and we believe that there are ways for that to happen" said IDB President. Specifically, the meeting reviewed the cooperation of Brazil and the IDB in the construction of a hydroelectric dam on the Artibonite River, the central basin of the country. Moreno estimated that the project of Artibonite is "very important [...] we must do" saying ready to cooperate with the Brazil in its construction. The hydroelectric project in the Artibonite is under study since 2009 and according to Brazilian plans, this plant would be able to generate 32 megawatts and its cost is estimated to 150 million.

The Brazilian Minister stressed "We want to focus on helping the new government of Haiti in the reconstruction and development" and reiterated the interest of Brazil towards Haiti.
