Haiti - Social : Truckers of Fond Parisien block the border of Malpasse

The truckers of the Haitian-Dominican transport syndicate (Syn-trans-haïdo) of Fond Parisien have resumed since Thursday, August 1, the border blockade Malpasse/Jimaní in protest against the failure to respect a promise of the Dominican authorities, concerning the release of Orile Cenat, a Haitian driver, arrested in April 2019 following a traffic accident involving the vehicle he drove in the Dominican Republic and another vehicle where several Dominican citizens have died https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-27925-icihaiti-dr-reopening-of-the-border-crossing-point-of-malpasse-jimani.html . Recall that a first blockade in early June was quickly lifted on June 3 on the promise of the Dominican authorities to release the Haitian driver on June 11...

Unlike Thursday, where commercial activities were only disrupted, Friday all traffic was blocked. Trucks were placed in front of the border fence to prevent the entry of all Dominican vehicles into Haitian territory. The small Haitian traders who make their weekly purchases at the binational market have had to turn back. No activity was reported either at the Haitian customs level.

Jean Sanet Nelson, President of the union "Syn-trans-haïdo", said the blockage will be maintained until the release of Orile Cénat. Stressing that according to the laws relating to traffic accidents on the Dominican territory "the Haitian driver should be released against the signing of a commitment protocol to compensate the victims..."

The Support Group for Returnees and Refugees urges the Haitian authorities to dialogue with the Dominican State in order to obtain a favorable solution to both parties to allow the resumption of activities at Malpasse/Jimaní.

Faced with this protest movement and this road blockade at the border, Colonel José Manuel Infante, Head of the Specialized Land Border Security Corps (CESFRONT), said that security in the border area had been reinforced and made no comment on the request for release, claimed by the protesting drivers...
