Haiti - Grand'Anse : Violent winds, a hundred houses destroyed (provisional balance)

Friday evening, violent winds caused extensive damage in several communes of Grand'Anse. The Communal Committees of the Directorate of Civil Protection (CCDPC) are at work. The assessment is under preparation.

"I learned with pain the great damage caused by the strong winds in Jérémie Friday, August 16, 2019. I gave instructions to the Primature so that all arrangements are made to rescue the families as quickly as possible. Sympathy," declared President Jovenel Moïse on his Twitter account.

Provisional assessment by CCDPCs :

No loss of life or injuries recorded;

Significant agricultural losses in several communes of the Department;

10 flooded houses in Corail;

9 Houses destroyed in Dame Marie

A hundred houses destroyed in the district of Fond Rouge (Jérémie)

Due to a wet and unstable weather regime that is spreading over the Caribbean regions, Haiti's Unite Hydro Meteorologique (UHM) predicts a high probability of rain on Grande'Anse and scattered showers on other departments of the country throughout the weekend. The usual precautions are for residents of areas at high risk of floods and landslides.
