Haiti - Geneva : OHCHR deeply concerned by the crisis situation in Haiti

On Friday in Geneva, Marta Hurtado, Spokesperson for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, speaking on the crisis in Haiti declared "We are deeply concerned about the protracted crisis in Haiti, and its impact on the ability of Haitians to access their basic rights to healthcare, food, education and other needs."

"[...] Since the beginning of the school year in September, most children across Haiti have been unable to go to school https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-28999-icihaiti-jeremie-school-reopenings.html . Roadblocks and violence have meant that people, particularly in regions outside the capital, have had serious difficulty accessing food https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-29125-haiti-humanitarian-jovenel-moise-asks-for-us-humanitarian-aid.html , drinking water, medicine and fuel https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-29148-haiti-humanitarian-un-concerned-about-the-potentially-dire-consequences-of-the-crisis.html . The health sector has been hit particularly hard, with shortages of electricity, fuel, supplies, and the inability of many medical personnel to reach their places of work https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-28881-icihaiti-crisis-humanitarian-catastrophe-in-hospitals.html . We are also concerned about the impact that the closure of judicial institutions https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-29147-icihaiti-insecurity-two-magistrates-associations-ask-judges-not-to-go-to-court.html and other public institutions is having in the country, especially on vulnerable groups. For example, the alarmingly high number of detainees in prolonged pre-trial detention https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-29152-haiti-crisis-in-prisons-confined-detainees-are-at-risk-of-starve-to-death.html has further increased due to the closure of many local courts for security reasons.

We urge all parties to avoid hampering the functioning of hospitals and to facilitate access to healthcare, as well as the delivery, including through humanitarian channels, of food and medicine for individuals in prisons, orphanages and other vulnerable groups such as people living with disabilities [...]"
