Haiti - Humanitarian : End of mission in Haiti hospital ship «USNS Comfort»

Monday at Admiral Killick Base (Bizoton, Carrefour) was held the closing ceremony of the mission "Sustainable Promise" hospital ship "USNS Comfort" https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-29184-haiti-health-the-us-hospital-ship-usns-comfort-has-arrived.html in presence among others of the American ambassador accredited in Haiti Michèle Sison, of Marie Greta Roy Clement, the Minister of Public Health, Normil Rameaux the General Director ai of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) and Jerry Chandeler, the Director General of Civil Protection.

Over the past week, members of the USNS Comfort medical mission provided free medical care and medical supplies to more than 3,500 Haitian men, women and children (provisional figures, care was still ongoing during the ceremony) and performed 75 surgeries including the operation of a 9-month-old baby with a facial malformation called "cleft lip" (or cleft palate).

US Ambassador Sison praised the collaboration of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) including officers of the Haitian Coast Guard Unit who worked together with the US military to make this mission a success.

She stressed that the mission was not limited to medical care and that donations of medical equipment worth more than $300,000 had been made to the Haitian Health Service (12 generators, operating tables, incubators for newborns, hospital beds...)

In his intervention Bryan Diebold, the Commander of the Hospital Vessel Response Force, recalled that his team was composed of more than 800 medical professionals from several Latin American and Caribbean countries and 89 collaborators from NGOs. Stressing that two soldiers of the US Navy, of Haitian origin also took an active part in this mission are Lieutenant Raphael, a native of Cap Haitien and Lieutenant Atis from Les Cayes who were also greeted by the Ambassador Sison
