Haiti - Education : Results of the first census of non-formal education structures in Haiti

In order to comply with the requirements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG #4) (Access to quality education by 2030), the Ministry of National Education, with the support of UNESCO, has conducted its first national census of evening centers and non-formal family education centers. This project pursues the objective of creating a precise and reliable information subsystem for the management of non-formal education.

The comprehensive survey on non-formal education organized by the Directorate of Planning and External Cooperation in collaboration with the Directorate of Fundamental Education and the Information System Unit has thus drawn up a report on the capacities operational centers of these training centers.

The data collected during the survey made it possible to count throughout the national territory, 206 institutions offering this type of education : 62 evening schools (56% female learners) and 144 family education centers (77% of female learners).

6 departments have evening centers : West, South, South-East, North, North-East, Artibonite and Nippes, most of these Centers are located in the department of West ( 68%), then comes the Department of the North with 13%.

For the Family Education Centers, they are present in 8 departments, the North-West and the South-East do not have one. Two departments, Artibonite and Grand-Anse, account respectively for 38% and 21% of these centers, whereas the departments of Center and Ouest have only 1% and 2% respectively.

In order to improve the governance of this sub-sector and better manage these Centers, UNESCO is engaged in close coordination with the Ministry of National Education in an advocacy process for the mobilization of resources aimed at strengthening the capacities of the agents of the non-formal education sub-sector, providing centers with teaching materials, equipment and energy sources and building and/or rehabilitating non-functional infrastructures.

It should be noted that ongoing interventions in the non-formal education sub-sector contribute to the empowerment of women and girls, effectively contributing to the reduction of poverty and gender inequalities.
