Friday, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) revealed that at the end of 2019, the number of Haitians living in food insecurity was more than 3.7 million, or 32% increase compared to the end of 2018

Of these, 2.6 million suffer from "Acute and critical insufficiency with severe malnutrition" (Phase 3 on the scale of 5 of the IPC) and 1.046 million (rural and urban), are in a situation of "Humanitarian emergency" (IPC Phase 4) affects approximately 35% of the population of Haiti.

The UN agency warned that the number could reach 4.2 million in March 2020, including 1.2 million in the humanitarian emergency. It also said that during 2020, 4.6 million Haitians (including 45.5% of children), nearly 40% of the population, will need humanitarian aid.

OCHA said the humanitarian situation in the country had been affected by the deteriorating economy, a slow growth rate, high inflation and rising prices of raw materials. Adding that insecurity and socio-political tensions have also had a negative impact on the humanitarian situation and have limited the distribution of humanitarian aid in a large part of the country.

The Agency believes that "The situation should remain unstable in the coming months, which will further weaken the economy and the ability of the most disadvantaged Haitians to meet their basic needs and the State to provide basic services."

The UN agency said that during the first 9 months of this year, the UN and its humanitarian partners had provided aid to 455,000 Haitians while being very affected by the lack of funding, which limited their operations.
